At work during the same time I was trying to figure out my CO wedding plans, my fellow laser program team member [ Bryant White ] kept talking about this self-recovery, deadman idea he was working on. For weeks on end, while we were assembling and troubleshooting our laser system, all I would hear about was this thing you burry in the ground to get unstuck while out in the desert. Bryant’s office was next door to mine, so news of the deadman project never ended. Talking about camping, off-roading, and adventure restoked a passion of being outdoors I had while back at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
Back then in college, I had a solid crew of friends in that we did multiple day backpacking trips, explored and hiked along the Central Coast, and rode bikes all around town as a means of transportation. Now living in San Diego since 2002, my outdoors activities transitioned into a lot of time spent at beach surfing or playing beach volleyball, all great stuff. However, I missed being away from the city hustle and in the solitude of the mountains. Realizing a 4x4 truck could reestablish that plus provide a means to get farther away became the deciding factor to retire the 12 year old Mazda truck and get something more capable for the adventures I wanted to complete. One decision down, next up – a brand new rig or something used….?
